The 2025 edition of the London’s Leading Underwriter (LLU) Report has been released, revealing the top performers shaping the future of the London Market.
This year, Bassel Matta of Atrium takes the coveted top spot of individual rankings, climbing from second place in 2024 and setting the tone for a year that places a premium on both technical prowess and the softer, human-centric skills now critical to market leadership.
Widely recognised as the benchmark for independent underwriting excellence, the LLU Report has become a definitive reference for talent and performance in the London underwriting arena.
Drawing on over 400 in-depth interviews with brokers and underwriters and based on nominations for nearly 700 individuals across more than 120 firms, the report offers a uniquely comprehensive snapshot of the market’s top performers.
Matta’s rise to number one underscores a broader evolution in what it means to be a “leading underwriter” in 2025.
While technical skill remains foundational, the report identifies increasing importance placed on qualities such as commercial acumen, clear communication, and the ability to foster trust-based, long-term relationships.
These attributes are proving decisive in an environment where underwriters must operate as strategic partners, not just risk assessors.
Joining Matta in the top ranks are Richard Trubshaw of MAP, who takes second place, and Ollie Richards of Talbot, who claims third.
Dervla Lynchehaun of Convex is named the top-ranked female underwriter for 2025, reflecting both individual excellence and the broader progress being made on gender representation across the market.
On the company side, Beazley maintains its position as the top firm for overall underwriting bench strength, signalling continued investment in talent and culture. Hiscox leads on gender diversity, earning distinction for having the highest female representation among top-performing underwriters, a key metric as the sector works to build a more inclusive and representative workforce.
Among the firms making the biggest impact this year, Ascot stands out as the fastest riser, reflecting growing market visibility and influence. Meanwhile, Apollo is recognised as the leading outperformer – a firm punching above its weight in terms of underwriting impact relative to its size.
Commenting on this year’s results, Ben Bolton, Managing Director of Gracechurch, said:
“The leading underwriters in 2025 are more and more defined by their proven ability to develop and retain quality business in a super-competitive market.”
“The modern leading underwriter does much more than pricing - they collaborate effectively with broking partners, tech partners and clients to help innovate and provide trusted solutions,” Bolton added.
The LLU Report aims to bring transparency and clarity to insurance market performance, using data-driven insights to help firms benchmark, improve, and attract top talent. With its robust methodology and peer-driven recognition, the LLU has become a critical tool for leaders across the London Market seeking to understand and cultivate excellence.
As the market continues to evolve under pressure from new risks, digital transformation, and changing client expectations, the need for standout underwriters has never been greater. The 2025 LLU Report makes one thing clear: the future of underwriting success lies not just in risk pricing, but in human connection, adaptability, and shared vision.
